In my opinion, this is one of the greatest ballad ever written and had been covered by many artists including The Hollies, Cher, The Osmonds, Barry Manilow and many others. It was written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell.

But I like most the Hollies' version of the song, the way they delivered the song and the music make it more appealing to me and give me a feeling of the real love between brothers or sisters or friends or families and loved ones. It always remind me of the scene in one of the Lords of the Rings Trilogy, The Return of The King, when Sam was helping Frodo up Mount Doom. He was really more than a friend and a brother to him.

And that also reminds me of my brother, who is now working in Saudi Arabia as an engineer, the things we did together when we were younger, the happy moments, the "brotherly" fights. While getting older, we became different and drifted apart emotionally but we knew inside ourselves that we still love each other, though afraid of showing it. We also share a common passion, which is music, Beatles and Nirvana, and we always get along together in that aspect. Now, I think we resolved already our differences within ourselves and he will always be my brother to me and I am to him.

A New Comeback

I just thought i was really out of the picture in the blogosphere for almost a year now, hehe. I think I have to continue writing in my blog and enjoy what I'm doing as a fan of music and writing materials for the fun of it.
I've got a huge amount of material backlogs for my blog. I've made two new songs, though in rough versions still, plus the music for my song written for my wife two years ago. I'd done the music more than a year ago but haven't got the time to properly record it, but to tell you the truth, I'm not that a great singer, haha. I can sing, only on some days, though. But my wife's a great singer. The second song is for my baby girl before she was born. I'm planning to record and write some things about these new songs here.
Next, I'm planning to write also of my own opinions behind the death of Kurt Cobain. I'm really a Nirvana fan and for those who knows or Nirvana fans too, I hope you'll like the material I am going to write about him. It will be based on articles I read on the internet, personal opinions and probably, a li'l bit of "investigating" also.
Also, I'm planning to write about some materials with my most favorite band, The Beatles. There are lots of information out there already in the internet, but I will write my own views with regards to this great band.
There are other things in my mind and I'm going to write about it as I go on to continue my blog, hehe.

Browsing the internet for electric guitars trying to find what is best for my taste and my budget, it's really hard to find what I'm looking for.

Well, ever since I learn to play the guitar, and after an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar and lots of borrowing from here and there from my friends, I learn to select a nice sounding guitar, perfect for playability and easy on my fingers. I can't say that I have professional knowledge on finding the best guitar or an authority on rating guitars, it's just my opinion for myself, and probably for my taste on music and my general concept on the guitar sound and my playing techniques.

I really love to own original guitars made by Yamaha, Gibson or Fender and play with them recording my cover and original materials. That's one of my dreams in life, have gigs with my brother and sister while my wife's singing and probably my sons and daughters, sponsor a free concert in my town with local bands playing. (7) But it never really mattered. Well, these are just wonderful things to have, hehe. But I guess I only need to believe more in this dream, hehe.. I'm wondering, why do I love to dream on things, hehe..??

I really love to sing and I sing many times but I am not gifted with great voice and my vocal range is I think limited only to one octave which easily gives stress to my vocal chords, hehe. I used to sing in a choir when I was in high school and used to do a lil bit of singing part in school activities in grade school. But, since I wasn't very keen of practicing my then moderate-grade vocal skills, it deteriorated to its present status and will need lots of practice, discipline and, most important, "self-confidence in singing". I kinda remember this one movie that my wife really loves, "10 Things I Hate About You". I believe it was 10 like years ago when it was released. (11) Love you whenever we're together. A modern day version of Shakespeare's play, "The Taming of the Shrew". It's a "chick-flick", I might say, but sometimes, I like watching those kind of movies especially with my wife. Home Studio | A Dream of a Dreamer

Well, in reference to my post of March 2, 2008 about leaving behind my electric and bass guitar in the Philippines, it was just for the reason of over-baggage and empty pockets and wallet in the Manila Airport. God, I miss my guitars (hehe, my wife's gonna kill me)!!! It's a different kind of missing, eh. It's really difficult that you cannot have or do the things that you love and left you craving for it. I miss playing it, fiddling with the chords, singing with it, embrace it, sleep with it, f&c* (face) it!!! heheeh! 'Just a joke.
I was planning of bringing my guitars here to Qatar plus their amplifiers through air or sea freight and I asked my friend working in the procurement section of our company to ask quotations from DHL on how much cost will it take. I was shocked that it will cost as much as buying a new electric guitar!! I've been thinking if I'm going to spend that much, I would rather buy a new electric guitar and probably sell those electric guitars I have in the Philippines through Ebay, hehe.. But, since I'm planning to set up my own music studio and hopefully start doing business with it, i might not sell it and I think that's a better idea.
Music Studio? Yup, that's one of my biggest dreams, to own a professional music studio. And I need more than electric guitars and amplifiers. Browsing in the internet plus a little bit of experience on home recording have given me better ideas on how to start my simple professional home studio and I am planning to have it in the next two years. I believe I need the following the most:

1. A room or place wide enough for my studio properly treated for a good studio sound recording
2. A bunch of electric guitars and other musical instruments (electric guitars, acoustic guitars, bass guitars, drum set, good-sounding mics, keyboards, others)
3. Amplifiers and mixers
4. Digital recording equipment such as high-end PC and recording software

The only question is, will I be able to get this dream within the next two years?? hehe...

Ranting With My High School Days Experiences With Life and Music, Eh...

I was watching some videos of my favourite bands, not actually my most favourite bands, but the bands that I grew up with imitating, singing their songs, even headbanging and jamming with my guitar playing along with the songs. (6) I didn't catch your name. I remember I was still in high school then when this underground-turned-mainstream bands were ripping out the charts. Those were the days of Nirvana's anthemic Smells Like Teen Spirit, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder diving into the crowd from the concert stage and others who were really amazing. Those were also the days of great OPM (Original Philippine Music) Alternative and pop rock bands like Eraserheads' Pare Ko (My Friend), The Youth's Mukha ng Pera (Face of Money), Orient Pearl, Introvoys and a lot of others.

At that time, I learned to watch concerts, limited only within my province (Batangas) though, followed local bands touring, watched MTV channel, joined battle of the bands with my friends and listen to the radio and to my "Sony walkman" (my father bought it abroad) the whole day, pumped up the volume of our stereo playing "Basura" and didn't care about the neighbours, hehe..

But in the end, what happened, hehe?? Well, i was kicked out of the honor roll when I was in 3rd year, fell in and out of puppy love, first love, love of a lifetime, love to die for, love-love; learned guitar and drums, lose the talent in singing (???), and many others I can't recall as of the moment of writing this blog, hehe.. (13) And when at last I find you. It's kinda ride-in-a-caterpillar with lots of different turns and ups and downs, and with many things in life learned, many experiences and memories put into my brain's unmanageable always-free memory cells. Well, let me take you down because I'm going to Strawberry Fields with everything's real.Lot of things to get hang about, my Strawberry Fields is forever. Memories are sweet and sour, some are sweeter but most are sour, make faces but smiling and laughing are easier, hate the world and the world will hate you and you'll be the loser. After almost three months of unemployment, I was recalled back to my work in Qatar by my previous company but with better salary and compensations. However, due to ticket reservation/confirmation problem and high over-baggage fee at the airport, I was forced to leave behind my guitars, that's so sad. That's one of the ways that I can combat homesickness and loneliness working abroad and I will not be able to play them for, I guess, at least a month. But I'm planning to get them through cargo delivery, c/o my wife.

That's one of the sacrifices of most of the Overseas Filipino Workers or anybody working far from their family to have a better living. The Best "Come Together" Cover Ever - Craig David

I still remember, just a few years ago I was watching this kind of tibute to John Lennon in the television. As a Beatles fan, I watched from the start to end and it's really great. The performances, the covered songs and most of the guest artists were really amazing, as well as the message of the tribute to the whole world. I thought that night, John Lennon's memories and principles of peace were revived. However, at that show, there were no traces of the other Beatles and I thought, from the start, that was only a show for John Lennon alone with Yoko Ono and their son, Sean Lennon. Beatles greatest songs were performed that night, and I especially loved "This Boy" 's version of Sean Lennon and his band, and Craig David's "Come Together" version. Watch this Youtube Video of Come Together and find out how really great the vocal and guitar plays are. I was trying to find this cover version for a long time and I found it, in YouTube, hehe.

It clearly shows that most of the reader of my blog are more a fan of the Beatles and would rather see them perform than the other three. (10) Love you with all my heart. However, this doesn't say that the Beatles are the best concert performer, technically or musically. I believe it depends also in factors like the technology at that time, the audience, the social factor, the media and many others.

In my own personal view, I would rather watch the Beatles at concert, not mainly because I'm a Beatle fan but rather the social factors in their era. It was, for me, the best times of the Beatles life, the audience's life and most of the world's population's life. Most Beatles critics would say, Beatles is the most overrated musical group! Well, hell, yeah. I guess you're right. hehe. It's just very easy to put your music famous in the whole world, to make your lyrics talked about, to be a focus of media-hype, etc. Even though your song is very simple, technically easy to play and used an overused melody, or the lyrics doesn't have impact, but if the whole world's listening to it and singing with it, and loving it. Don't you think you'll be called overrated if your song is the most popular song??

Lake of Fire - Final Audio Sample of the Home Recording

As a conclusion to my project of a series of recording my own version of a Nirvana track from their MTV Unplugged Live in New York album, Lake of Fire, included with this is my final audio sample of the recordings. The samplitude audio recording software is used to sample and edit the audio tracks and finally, mastered it. However, as far as I am concern, and as what I've been saying before, I am not a professional guy in this kind of things, I just love to record, edit and then listen to what I'd just done, and if it's good to my ear, I'll post it here. Anyway, this is my blog and no one can stop me, hehe, except if I done illegal things, such as (what?)...

How to Celebrate Kurt Cobain's Birthday?

Well, i found this article when lazily surfing the internet. It's a list of the crazy ideas you can do to celebrate Kurt Cobain's birthday if you are his die-hard fan, hehe. But to all other music lovers out there, you can appreciate him by playing his songs in any other days. Look deeper into the lyrics, if you can, I'm sure you'll get something helpful for you. Something helpful from a man who killed himself, hehe. But, really, his songs are thought-provoking especially when you learned the story behind his songs.

Remembering Kurt Cobain on his Birthday, Feb. 20

Today is Kurt Cobain's birthday. BTW, who is he anyway? He was the frontman of one of the best grunge band in history, NIRVANA. Well, I think he started the grunge rock band (sort of punk rock, I believe) during the late 80's and early 90's.

He was born Kurt Donald Cobain Feb. 20, 1967 in Hoquiam, Washington and began developing interest in music at the early age of two years. (9) Love you forever and forever. He was a fan of Beatles (me too) and his favourite song was Hey Jude. His life changed at the age of seven with the divorce of his parents. He began to hate the world (most youth of today feel this way, dunno why). But at the age of 14, he had his first guitar and learned very hard to perfect and master his style. He began to "jam" with other local youth band and met Krist Novoselic on the way. Formed a band, NIRVANA. They rotated with some other musicians and found Dave Grohl as the perfect drummer. And the rest is history. He killed himself (many of his fans don't accept this) by blowing his head off with a shotgun on April 5, 1994.

On this post, I don't want to remember Kurt Cobain with his biography, you'll be able to find it anyway through internet. Rather, I would like to remember him as one of my musical influences. My influences are the Beatles, Nirvana, Metallica, Rock & Roll and 90's rock band, mainly because I learned guitar and "basics" of music with Beatles songs and Rock & Roll, I was in my adolescent and early adulthood during 90's and played mostly Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Guns & Roses, etc. But Nirvana influenced me the most, especially on Kurt's guitar playing skills and his lyrics. I'm very amazed till now how he sang with that "magical voice" (just shut up with the descriptions I used, hehe) and played his electric guitar so skillfully. I even like how he trashed his guitars and things on stage after every concerts, hehe. Musically, he wrote his own songs and melodies, and created most of their song's arrangements. If you want to really know just how musically capable Kurt Cobain is, just listen to these songs (my favourites):

Lake of Fire - Recording the Lead Guitar and Solos

Well, here we are. The final leg of the recording process of my project, Lake of Fire cover from Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York album tracks. In the previous posts, I have already recorded the drums track, bass guitar track and the two backing guitar tracks, and I've posted them with videos of the recording process. After recording this Lead Guitar and Solos track, the only thing left is mastering the tracks. It is where I will process, tweak or polish the tracks with plugins included with my Samplitude audio recording software.

In continuation with my project, recording Lake of Fire from Nirvana MTV Unplugged in New York album using Samplitude audio recording software, these are the videos of two backing guitar tracks. I planned to record three guitar tracks, two for backing guitars and one lead guitar. The two backing guitar tracks are recorded with the bass and drum tracks at the background. The two guitar tracks are "panned" left and right to produce that "stereo effect" in the final product. They are also in different tone (equalizer settings). Lake of Fire - Recording the Bass Video

To continue the recording of Lake of Fire as popularized by Nirvana in their Nirvana MTV Unplugged in New York album, I have this video recording the bass track of the song while the drums track plays at the background. The drums track was prerecorded in Samplitude in "Drums Track", a single track. The bass is then recorded onto the second track and I named it "Bass Track". When you watch the video and listen to the sound, it's not yet perfect and further processing and tweaking will be done on the audio recordings. After this, the guitar tracks will be recorded. This is the second of the series of posts on my cover of Nirvana's versions of Lake of Fire. As I've learned from my previous experiences, watching through televisions and browsing the internet, it's easier to record song if you started from the drums part of the song. Well, the first, though, is you have to record the basic track of the song, and in this case, since I have to cover the original song, including the arrangements, etc., I record with the original song as the basic track. So, I started recording the drums track playing the original song in the background. I have used a midi drums software with the WAV output of the sound card recorded directly to my Samplitude software. Here is the picture of the recording...

The next part will be the bass track to be shown on my next posts.

I like to promote a website for music lovers.. I believe its a good thing to promote one's site even though you are, in many sense, competitors. I just love the way their website offers many things. All you have to do is sign-up, the easiest sign-up procedure that I ever had, hehe. And then, voila, you can start sharing your music.
I don't want to throw my readers off my blog to that website, though, but it's just interesting. However, since my site is a blog and my personal views of music that I love, you can make comments, good or bad comments, you can read my posts, but at the end of the day, I still have the power to remove them and not hear from you, hehe.. Writing a new song.. (2) - Lake of Fire

I've been busy for the past few days and haven't got any time to write a blog. In reference with my previous blog, I was to write a new song, I have the chords all ready, some lyrics line and have already idea on how the song will go, however, as what I've said just a while ago, I'm quite busy, hehe.. Here's what I'm planning now, I will record a song, specifically, a Nirvana song in their Unplugged album so I won't have to start from scratch. I will put the recording process on video and you will be able to see it here in my blog, including the tabs and chords that I used. Hopefully, though, I'll get it done and good, hehe..

Writing a new song...

In my long years of being an "amateur musician", I always like to write new song materials, but, as a musician influenced by Western music alone, I can't come up with new melodies and always have to write under Western music melodies restrictions, though there's quite a number of it, but have been used in almost all popular recordings and songs with just different arrangements and few changes. But, I guess, I really don't have much experience, heheh. Anyway, if you will notice in Western music-influenced songs, you will only be able to recognize few melodies and be it R&R, R&B, blues, etc, they're almost always the same. But in jazz, as I've mentioned in my previous blog, it's different.
Anyway, I've just written a "bluesy?" kind of love song which is a little bit of alternative rock as what you call today and I used a very "useful" melody, hehe, (I-vi-I-vi-IV-V) with a little changes in arrangement though, and a different bridge part. I'm planning to record it with a simple bass line and guitar backgrounds, but, with a little help from my brother who is coming for vacation from abroad, he will lend me his lead guitarist skills, hehe. I'm not finished with the lyrics, though, but I will post the recording process here in my blog from conception to finish.

If you are a bass player, you have a wide range of musical knowledge and you enjoy and appreciate the music of the past, I'll bet my "lucky peso coin" that you know who's Paul I'm talking about. Yeah, that's right! It's none other than Paul McCartney of The Beatles. (16) Make it easy to be near you. In my opinion, he's one of the best bass players ever. If you only knew or heard of the music in Beatles time or specifically, the 60's, I believe there's no great bass players other than those playing the jazz, well, jazz is all about improvisation. But in rock and roll and pop music scene in the 60's, it all started with Paul's improvisation and he's really gifted. And here's one of his song with hard-beatin' bass that will keep you rockin'.. Imagine, playing these bass lines while singing your heart out ala McCartney and headbanging ala Beatles, heheh.. Well, let'ya fingers dance!!

As Long As It Matters - My Own Version No. 3

I never forget, hehe... Well, its about my previous blog with regards to Samplitude Recording or professional audio software.. hehe.. I promised that I will post a recording of my own version of Gin Blossom's As Long As It Matters. It's actually the 3rd recording and I tweaked some audio files here and there to show that the software is really for amateur and professional alike. I recorded the song (without the vocal part though) alongside the original music. First, I did the drum part, two tracks or double-tracked. Then afterwards, I recorded the bass.. That's what I like about the song, the bass part.. It's double-tracked also.. Then I played the guitar parts. Two distorted guitar tracks and then two acoustic guitar tracks.. You can hear them at the recording. Then a track for solo guitar parts. And last, a lil bit of keyboard orchestra there.. hehe.. Then that's it.. Just listen to it and email me if you want to record your own materials with me.. We can be bandmates through the power of technology, hehe..

Out For Days, Michael Jackson's Beat It, Ben and Billie Jean

A li'l bit of strain on the title. In fact, my body's attacked with influenza virus (flu) and I feel uncomfortable of these bouts of coughing, fever and headache. I just only wanted to write today, hehe..
Well, I've been thinking whatever happens to Michael Jackson?? I don't know if he's out already of the music business or, but, hey, what is Google for? And voila!!!

1. Rumor has it that he will be doing a string of concerts in the UK...
2. Unveiling of the Thriller Album for it's 25th anniversary
3. Photoshoots there and there...
4. And another photoshoots..
5. A new album???

Personally, I don't like Michael Jackson, and of what he is now, but musically, I enjoy the music that he's written. Especially the melody he created in his songs. Some of his songs that I love are Beat It, Ben and Billie Jean. Beat It got this nice solo and I believe it was Van Halen who performed this "bomb shell" solo. Ben, however, is very touching and sentimental, hehe. Do you remember the movie?? And last but not the least, I love Billie Jean the most. It's widely acknowledged as one of his most critically acclaimed songs and regarded by some as his signature song. The overall hunting nature of the song and the "perfect bass line" helped to make the song unique, and hell, it was written by MJ himself, including the orchestration and arrangements. That's what I like about MJ.

Yamaha RBX-170 Electric Bass Guitar

The bass guitar featured at the header of this blog is a Yamaha RBX-170, the same bass I have, mine is black color, though. It is an entry level bass built on the popular Yamaha RBX Series Electric bass guitars, however, this bass "simply rocks" and beginners or professional bass players can own quality Yamaha bass without spending big dollars. I bought mine last August 2007 when I was still working in Qatar and I used to play it with my brother and co-workers to ease the boredom of working abroad.
This Yamaha bass sports an Agathis body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and chrome hardware. Electronics include split single coil pickups (straight type) and passive volume, tone and balance controls. It has 24 frets.
It's great for giving action and perfect speed on the fingerboard. The passive controls are very easy to use and I just normally set my bass amp's controls to all zeros, except the volume control of course, and settle with just the bass controls. It's also light which is great for long gigs. The bridge pickup provides a rocky, fat tone, whilst the neck offers astounding blues. You can hear it in the way the pickups bring out the tone woods, and you can feel it in the construction. It really stands out over the other basses that are in this price range.

Beatles' In My Life Reviewed

In My Life, a song from the Beatles from their 1965 album Rubber Soul. It was composed by John Lennon, originally, a long poem reminiscing his childhood and teenage years which tells of his bus route he used to take in Liverpool, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. The words were reworked with Paul McCartney for the Rubber Soul album. Musically, McCartney's contribution was supplying the harmony and the "middle eight" (bridge) sections of the song, however, in some sources, McCartney claimed that he set John Lennon's lyrics to music from beginning to end.
The song itself, when you heard it, will remind you of your own childhood. Though the lyrics is already a bomb itself (moving and poignant), the whole melody, gives you a nostalgic feeling of going back in time, remembering your childhood, the things that you used to do, the friends you have or had, the places you've been through, especially, at the piano solo part where George Martin (the Beatles producer) played it "like Bach". Also, Ringo Starr (drummer) applied a different style on the drums compared to their previous songs. The drum beat bass - snare -bass - open hi-hat - close hi-hat - snare was set beautifully with the melody. Although the vocal part is not the best among the Beatles' song, it was masterfully crafted into the song as well, just listen to vocal duets parts of John and Paul as well as the double-tracked vocal part of John.
The song has been covered by a number of artists including Mary Hopkins, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Allison Crowe, Bette Midler and many more.

Trivia: This song wa played in Kurt Cobain's funeral.

My History of Guitar-Learning

From a popular saying, if you want to learn something, you have to sweat it out. But if you did not learn it, well, it's not for you. In my opinion, learning how to play guitar is a continuous process, as what music is also. You learn new melodies, new innovations, etc. I started plucking my first note on a guitar when I was still in grade school. I was in Grade 5 then, in the Philippines, it's around 11 years old. I was using then my uncle's delapitated guitar with cracked body, hard strings, and uneven neck. I asked my uncle to teach me how to read the guitar chords and tabs, a little bit of music lesson from school and then I was up to go. It was very hard at the first time, trying to reach the strings with your left fingers, pressing hard onto the strings and feeling as if the strings are going to cut your fingers. After almost a year, I learned many guitar chords and basic songs, mostly Beatles' songs, because there were many songbook featuring the Beatles at our house then. When I was in High School, the rock band, especially alternative and grunge rock emerged and everybody put up their own band. I also put up my own band but nothing last more than month, hehe. I went from gig to gig and I played with different people, even those who are 20 years older than me. I enjoyed it and I learned many things. And during my last year in High School, I started to learn playing the bass guitar. Before that, I thought the bass players or the bass guitarists are the poorest guitar player in the band and usually are kept behind the band, including the bass sound they create. However, learning the bass taught me that the bass players are the great innovators of the song, the music, in fact, I believe they are the soul of the song itself. And that's my opinion and I believe on that. I started then playing the bass guitar. I started innovating myself, I learned Paul McCartney's bass playing style and technique, my fave are Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and Buhawi (Parokya ni Edgar, a Philippine band), though. However, searching through the internet taught me that in playing the bass, you have to learn to play the drums, learn the beat, learn the melody of the guitar as well as the whole music itself so you can put the bass best ever in a song. So, much have been said, I'm on my self-study in playing the bass mainly, the electric guitar and the drums, not professionally though.

Samplitude - Professional Audio Recording Software

There was a time in my life when I was still learning to play guitar, that was in my grade school that I dreamed about recording my own music. I was with my childhood friends and we were imitating the famous Beatles, heheh..
Well, at that time, I was dreaming to have those recording gadgets, mixing tables, dynamic microphones, and others which were very expensive, even nowadays. But, today, with the advent of personal computers, getting cheaper everyday but giving more capabilities, including music recording. Now you can record your own music or song covers of your favourite bands with the use of some medium-class microphones, electronic musical instruments and a personal computer with medium specs. All you need is a recording software. Well, I recommend Magix Samplitude, because I own one. The latest version is 10. Here is one of the photo of the samplitude environment, I'm recording here "As Long As It Matters".

Although I'm new with Samplitude and learning every bit of it, I'm quite good with guitars and drums and I played most of the instruments in this recording. I'll post the finish product after 2 or 3 days.
